Professor Chang Shu of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and his team prepared case studies, seven thoracic endovascular aortic repair surgeries, and one complex open surgery of aneurysms of iliac artery for the surgeons. In one of these surgeries, he adopted fenestration technique and preserved the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery. "Chinese surgeons' surgical technique is amazing!" said Walter Chaui, an Argentina vascular surgery physician, after observing Professor Chang Shu using fenestration technique to preserve the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery. Professor Chang Shu shared his personal experience with the Latin American experts and they took turns to assist him in the surgeries. Walter Chaui said, it was exciting to be the assistant of Professor Chang Shu and he learnt a lot from such experience. Meanwhile, there were also lectures and Q&A sessions in which Professor Chang Shu actively interacted with the attendees regarding questions about the surgeries.
From August 24 to August 25, the Latin American experts went to Beijing for surgical observation. In Fuwai Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor Chang Shu and his team gave lectures themed on "aortic arch treatment and trend" and "hybrid repair of extensive aortic arch disease." Meanwhile, these experts were divided into groups to observe surgeries including thoracic endovascular aortic repair, prosthetic vessel replacement, and hybrid aortic arch replacement performed by Professor Chang Shu using MicroPort® Endovascular's Hercules®-T Low Profile Thoracic Stent-Graft System and Delivery system, and had discussions with him about the surgical cases and chimney techniques. In the end of the forum, the Latin American surgeons said this academic exchange was rewarding and fruitful and they would apply the medical concept and surgical techniques learnt in this activity to clinical applications to serve more local patients. Dr. Lin said: "MicroPort® has been hosting the aortic intervention international forums for several consecutive years and the academic exchange between Chinese and foreign surgeons has always played an important role in these events, by which MicroPort® aims to build a platform for academic exchange and medical education. With the promotion of the 'Belt and Road' initiative, we hope that more experts from countries involving in the 'Belt and Road' initiative and Latin American countries along the 'Maritime Silk Road' can come to China for academic exchange, and jointly push the development of aorta interventional therapy.'"
